2021-22 ACAC Curling Rookies of the Year

2021-22 ACAC Curling Rookies of the Year

Edmonton, AB (March 11, 2022)

Men's Rookie of The Year:

The Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) is pleased to announce Tyler Brodt of the NAIT Ooks has been selected as the 2021-22 ACAC Men’s Curling Rookie of the Year.

Tyler Brodt had an outstanding rookie season with the NAIT Ooks curling team. Brodt was a member of the mixed team this season. They went 2-0 in their first bonspiel of the season and came out with a 1-1 record in the second. His team was ranked first in the league with a 3-1 record going into the Curling Championship.

Head Coach Karynn Flory-Simmons said, “Tyler is so deserving of the Men’s Curling Rookie of the Year; without having much skip experience, he stepped into the skip role on the mixed team one week before our first bonspiel and led them to a 2-0 record. The Mixed Team rolled into provincials with an overall record of 3-1 following both spiels. Tyler’s calm demeanour and confidence in his team and shot making truly helped propel this team to their silver medal finish. Tyler is always willing to learn and improve, and I cannot wait to see what he accomplishes during his time with us at NAIT.”

Tyler Brodt is a first-year Construction Engineering Technology student passionate about curling. The Edmonton area native won the 2018-19 Metro Edmonton High School Championship with his mixed team, and in 2019 they earned silver at the ASAA High School Provincials. In 2020, Brodt played with the men’s team, bringing home yet another Metro Edmonton High School Championship.

This prestigious award was recognized at the 2022 ACAC Curling Championship hosted by the Augustana Vikings in Camrose, Alberta.

Women's Rookies of The Year:

The Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) is pleased to announce Bryn Woloshyn from The University of Alberta, Augustana Vikings Women’s Curling team, as the 2021-22 ACAC Female Curler Rookie of the Year. She shares this award with Kaylee Raniseth from the RDP Queens.

The rookie from Royston, British Colombia was stellar all season for the Vikings in the third position, even as the team struggled to find wins during the two ACAC bonspiels generating just a single win.

However, it would all come together for Woloshyn and her teammates as they slid into the gold medal game at the 2022 ACAC Curling Championship. Marking the target for her teams skip, Josie Zimmerman, Woloshyn and the Vikings claimed gold in a 7-4 win over the RDP Queens, while also earning  back-to-back ACAC Championships for the Vikings Women’s Curling team.

“There has been one constant all year and that has been Bryn.  She has adapted, adjusted, and ensured her teammates have felt welcomed, supported, and included. She stepped up as a leader. She has an extremely positive, upbeat attitude that has athletes wanting to play with her.  Her insight and knowledge comes with a lot of experience as she participated in the Canada Winter Games. Her opinions and ideas are provided in a mature manner that allow her to voice her input and gain consensus almost immediately.”

Currently, the promising curler is in her first year of Bachelor of Science in Engineering program and got her start in curling after trying through her school when she was younger. Since then, she has gone on the represent team BC at the 2019 Canada Winter Games in Red Deer, Alberta.

The Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) is pleased to announce Kaylee Raniseth of the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens has been selected as the 2021/2022 ACAC Women’s Curling Co-Rookie of the Year.

Raniseth has adjusted extremely well to curling at the post-secondary level. In only her first season, the Bachelor of Education Elementary student made a positive impact on her team, contributing to a silver medal at the ACAC Curling Championships. Raniseth and the RDP Queens gave it their all at the championships, but were downed by the University of Alberta Augustana Vikings 7-4 in the gold medal game with a precise final shot.

The student-athlete from Delburne contributed to a very respectable 3-1 bonspiel record in January. At the ACAC Curling Championships, the Queens ranked first (4-0) in the women’s standings and capped off the final day with a medal and a list of awards.

“Kaylee had an excellent season on the ice for the Queens. Her play and demeanour were beyond a typical first-year student-athlete,” said Randy Stewart, Manager, Athletics and Student Life. “What is impressive about Kaylee is with continuing growth and experience at the post-secondary level, she will continue to evolve her game to another level.”

Raniseth was also recognized as the ACAC Female Curling All-Conference third.
