2021-22 ACAC Women’s Basketball Coaches of the Year

North Coach of The Year:
The Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) is proud to announce Chris King of the Lakeland Rustlers has been named the ACAC Women’s Basketball North Coach of the Year.
This is the fifth time King has received the Coach of the Year award. King is a certified coach with multiple professional development courses completed as well. He has coached the women’s basketball program at Lakeland for the past 14 seasons and the 2021–2022 season will mark the 11th consecutive year that he has led the women’s basketball team into the postseason. In the 2019 – 2020 season, King led the Rustlers to an ACAC gold medal and the opportunity to attend the national championships. This current season, the Rustlers women’s team finished the regular season with a 16 – 0 record and a first-place finish in the north division.
“Chris is a very passionate coach,” commented Alan Rogan, Lakeland’s athletic director. “He invests a significant amount of time into the student-athletes and women’s basketball program and has set very high expectations for his team which he works with every one of the student-athletes to achieve.”
King has worked with both the Alberta and Saskatchewan Provincial Basketball programs filling roles as assistant and head coach on multiple provincial teams as well as a Canada games team. He also coordinates the Rustlers Youth Basketball program in Lloydminster that focuses on the development of skills predominantly in children from Kindergarten to grade 7 and runs a basketball academy. During the summer King also oversees the Rustlers Club Basketball program and multiple summer camps in the Lloydminster community.
King and the entire women’s basketball team are looking forward to the championships and will be working hard to earn another berth to the national championship.
This prestigious award will be recognized at the 2022 ACAC Women’s Basketball Championship hosted by Lakeland College in Lloydminster, Alberta.
South Coach of The Year:
The Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) is proud to announce Ken McMurray of the Lethbridge College Kodiaks has been named the ACAC Women’s Basketball South Coach of the Year.
The principal at Cardston High school, McMurray is in his first official full year of guiding the Kodiaks women’s basketball program. Assuming the reigns from the South divisions last coach of the year (2019-20), Deanna Simpson, in June of 2021.
“Transitioning from an assistant and co-coach situations with the program during the bulk of the pandemic, Ken took control of the program in June and put his stamp on it immediately,” says Todd Caughlin, Manager of Kodiaks Athletics. “Ken and his assistant coach (Emily Greeno) along with every coaching staff in the conference had definite challenges to face during the ACAC’s pandemic transition season and for Ken to step in as a first year head coach and build the sense of team that he did is amazing,” added Caughlin. “We are excited to see the future direction of Ken’s leadership with the program as we transition out of the pandemic!”
