2021-22 ACAC Men’s Basketball Players of the Year

North Player of The Year:

The Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) is pleased to announce Sean Michael-Clancey of the Keyano College Huskies has been selected as the 2021-22 ACAC Men’s Basketball North Player of the Year.

Michael-Clancey led the Huskies to their first perfect season in team history with a perfect 16-0 record. Individually, he repeated as the top scorer in the ACAC for a second-straight season after earning the honours in the 2019-20 campaign. His 389 points through 16 games translated to 24.3 points per game, which ranked second in the conference.

He also led the ACAC in field goals made (144) and steals (45) while additionally ranking in the top 10 of the ACAC for free throws made (68 – 4th), defensive rebounds (97 – 7th), overall rebounds (128 – 7th), and free throw percentage (81.0 – 9th). 

Michael-Clancey recorded double-digit points in all 16 regular season games, scoring a season-high 38 points on February 6, 2022 against the Concordia Thunder. His rebounding skill led him to record seven double-doubles throughout the regular season. He had a season-high 15 rebounds on November 20, 2021 against the Lakeland Rustlers. 

“I think Sean has definitely asserted himself as one of the best players in our league and in the country,” Head Coach Jeremy Wielenga said. “He did that in 2019-20 and he did that again this year. I think the consistency that he’s brought every day at practice and on the floor on the games on the weekend, he’s become a complete player. He’s been nothing short of unbelievable for us. I’m happy to have him here.”

A product of Las Vegas, Nevada, Michael-Clancey is currently in his fourth year of eligibility and is enrolled in Keyano College’s Business program. He’s the first student-athlete from the Keyano Huskies to be named ACAC Player of the Year since Zach Alger-Waldher earned the honours in the 2011-12 season. As well, Michael Clancey is the first ACAC student-athlete to repeat as scoring champion of the entire conference since the 2004-05 and 2005-06 seasons. 

This prestigious award will be recognized at the 2022 ACAC Men’s Basketball Championship hosted by SAIT in Calgary, Alta.

 

South Player of The Year:

The Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) is pleased to announce Tyronn King of the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings has been selected as the 2021/2022 ACAC Men’s Basketball South Player of the Year. 

On many nights, six-foot-one King was the offensive spark for the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings. The fifth-year guard led his team and league with 24.6 points per game. King, a Legal Assistant student, connected on 41.3 per cent of his shots from the field, 27.8 per cent from three-point range and 83.1 per cent from the free throw line.

“Ty is an elite scorer and someone that you want to build a team around,” said Darren Graham, who became Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Basketball Head Coach in 2019. “He was my first recruit and made my life a lot easier as a new coach.” 

The ACAC scoring leader from Toronto averaged 3.3 assists and 1.5 steals per game, but he also contributed defensively. Of King’s 7.3 rebounds per game, 6.1 occurred in the defensive zone.  

“Ty is a leader by example, and I appreciate this team first mentality. He will go out there and battle for you every night,” explained Graham. “I appreciate his character. He always conducts himself with such a cool, calm demeanour on and off the court.”

This prestigious award will be recognized at the 2022 ACAC Men’s Basketball Championship hosted by SAIT in Calgary, Alberta.
