2021-22 ACAC Men’s Basketball Coaches of the Year

Edmonton, AB (March 10, 2022)

North Coach of The Year:

The Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) is proud to announce Jeremy Wielenga of the Keyano College Huskies has been named the ACAC Men’s Basketball North Division Coach of the Year.

Wielenga guided the Keyano Huskies Men’s Basketball team to their first perfect season in team history, going 16-0 throughout the 2021-22 ACAC Regular Season. As a team, the Huskies led the ACAC with 93.1 points per game, also owning a conference-best 1.146 offensive efficiency rating.

The honour marks back-to-back North Division Coach of the Year Awards for the Brandon, Man. product, who was bestowed with the award at the conclusion of the 2019-20 ACAC Regular Season.

Since Wielenga was hired to lead the Huskies ahead of the 2017-18 ACAC Regular Season, the Keyano Huskies Men’s Basketball team has a 69-19 record, giving them a .784 winning percentage over that span.

On February 13, 2022, Wielenga coached the Huskies to their 150th regular season win in team history since joining ACAC play in the 2010-11 ACAC Regular Season.


“We’re incredibly fortunate to have a coach of Jeremy’s caliber as part of our staff,” Director of Athletics & Recreation Jonathan Lambert said. “Since his arrival, he’s set forth a strong example for coaching in our program and throughout our conference.

“He’s also become a pillar in the growth of the basketball community in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo and an invaluable source of support and mentorship for those seeking to expand their skill set.”  

This prestigious award will be recognized at the 2022 ACAC Men’s Basketball Championship hosted by SAIT in Calgary, Alta.

 

South Coach of The Year:

The Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) is proud to announce Ryan Heggie of the Lethbridge College Kodiaks has been named the ACAC Men’s Basketball South Coach of the Year.

The reigning South division and ACAC Coach of the year (2019-20), Heggie has been at the helm of the Kodiaks Men’s basketball program for 10 years. Hailing from Raymond, Alberta, Heggie leads the program that is a perennial contender for the ACAC men’s basketball title. 

“The pure and honest dedication Coach Heggie has to putting the program into contention season in and out is special but its his commitment to building and developing better student athletes both on and off the court that makes him a great coach to have leading the Kodiaks,” says Todd Caughlin, Manager of Kodiaks Athletics. “Every coaching staff in the ACAC faced unique challenges during this pandemic transition season and should be commended for the work done and for Coach Heggie to be recognized by his peers makes Lethbridge College and Kodiaks nation proud!” adds Caughlin. 

This prestigious award will be recognized at the 2022 ACAC Men’s Basketball Championship hosted by SAIT in Calgary, Alberta.
