Jay Patel Honoured as 2021-22 ACAC Men’s Badminton Rookie of the Year

Edmonton, AB (March 3, 2022) – The Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) is pleased to announce Jay Patel of the NAIT Ooks has been selected as the 2021-22 ACAC Men’s Badminton Rookie of the Year.

Jay Patel has had an outstanding rookie season with the NAIT Ooks badminton team. Patel competes in both the men’s singles and men’s doubles events. In the first season of his ACAC career, Patel managed to place third in men’s singles and second with his partner Shivansh Shivansh in men’s doubles. In the second tournament of the year, NAIT was the host, giving Patel the home-court advantage. Patel stayed consistent with men’s doubles bringing home third place for a second time. Patel was partnered with Brandon Gendre for men’s doubles, where they placed third in the event.

NAIT Ooks badminton head coach Alan Chow said, “Jay is a young but mature and bright athlete that embodies what coaches look for. His attitude and effort are consistent and helps drive the competition and brings the team’s spirits up. Besides training hard, you will see him always smiling, and he’s just a joy that he brings to the team.”

Jay Patel is a first-year Electrical Engineering Technology student from Edmonton, Alberta. In grade 9, he placed third in the singles event of Cities. He went on to a second-place win in doubles at the provincial championships in grade 10. Unfortunately, the grade 11 and 12 seasons were lost due to covid, but Patel persevered and earned his place on the NAIT Ooks badminton team.

This prestigious award will be recognized at the 2022 ACAC Badminton Championship hosted by Olds College in Olds, Alberta.
