Charles O'Toole Honoured as 2021-22 Men's Soccer North Coach of the Year

(OCTOBER 28, 2021) – The Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) is proud to announce Charles O'Toole of NAIT has been named the ACAC Men's Soccer North Coach of the Year.

The Ooks finished the regular season with a 5-0-1 record, good enough for 1st place in the North division. NAIT finished 1st in the ACAC in points (65) and had the highest shooting percentage at .245.

Charles is a former NAIT grad from the Denturist program. He played for the Ooks soccer program, winning a national championship in 1987. He has been either an assistant or head coach of the Ooks men's team since 2009.

Charles brings an impressive coaching resume to the NAIT men's soccer program. He has coached numerous Alberta Soccer Association teams, including the 2011 Western Summer Games champions, the 2009 Canada Games silver medalists, and the 2007 U16 Provincial Team national champions. Charles also won coach of the year in 2017.

Aside from having extensive coaching experience, he played professionally with the Edmonton Brick Men in the PCL from 1986-89 and won a gold medal at the 1985 Canada Summer games, scoring the lone goal in the final.

Since starting in a coaching position at NAIT, Charles has obtained National A License, this is the highest soccer coaching certification in Canada. His team has been nationally ranked on a consistent basis over the years, which he gives credit to previous head coaches and to the dedication and talent of the players who attend NAIT.

NAIT Athletics Director Jordan Richey had this to say in regard to Charles.

"Charles is very deserving of his selection as the ACAC North Men's Soccer Coach of the Year. His attention to detail combined with his soccer knowledge has kept the Ooks men's soccer program near the top of the national rankings for the past decade. With the distractions of COVID and the loss of the NAIT home soccer field this year, Charles continued to keep his team focused resulting in an appearance in this season's ACAC Gold medal game. NAIT Athletics would like to congratulate Charles on this award and thank him for all that he has done for the men's soccer program over the years."

Charles will lead his NAIT Ooks this weekend at the 2021 ACAC men's soccer championship game at home against the SAIT Trojans.
