Charles O'Toole named ACAC 2017-18 Men’s Soccer North Division Coach of the Year
Edmonton, October 26 , 2017 – The Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) is pleased to announce that NAIT Ooks men's soccer coach Charles O'Toole has been selected as the 2017 ACAC North Division Coach of the Year.
The Ooks finished the regular season with a 9-1 record, good enough for a 1st place tie in the North division with the Keyano Huskies. NAIT finished 1st in the ACAC in shots (181) and had the fewest goals allowed, yielding only 5 all season.
Charles is a former NAIT grad from the Denturist program. He played for the Ooks soccer program, winning a national championship in 1987. He has been either an assistant or head coach of the Ooks men's team since 2009.
Charles brings an impressive coaching resume to the NAIT men's soccer program. He has coached numerous Alberta Soccer Association teams, including the 2011 Western Summer Games champions, the 2009 Canada Games silver medalists, and the 2007 U16 Provincial Team national champions.
Aside from having extensive coaching experience, he played professionally with the Edmonton Brick Men in the PCL from 1986-89 and won a gold medal at the 1985 Canada Summer games, scoring the lone goal in the final.
Since starting in a coaching position at NAIT, Charles has obtained his National B License and has recently finished his National A License. This is the highest soccer coaching certification in Canada. His team has been nationally ranked on a consistent basis over the years, which he gives credit to previous head coaches and to the dedication and talent of the players who attend NAIT.
NAIT Athletics Director John Bower had this to say in regards to Charles.
"The entire NAIT family is pleased that Charles has been recognized by his peers for his team's on-field accomplishments this season. With a 39-7-4 career mark, it is clear that Charles is one of the top coaches in Canadian collegiate soccer and we congratulate him and his staff on earning their first Coach of the Year award."
Charles will lead his NAIT Ooks this weekend at the 2017 ACAC men's soccer championship hosted by NAIT at Emerald Hills Regional Sports Park in Sherwood Park. The Ooks will face the Medicine Hat College Rattlers in the 2nd quarter-final match Friday. Complete schedule and results can be found on the ACAC website.
