For the third consecutive year and fifth time in six years, the NAIT Ooks rule supreme in Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference women's soccer, defeating the Grande Prairie Regional College Wolves 2-0 Sunday at the 2016 ACAC Women's Soccer Championships hosted by Concordia University of Edmonton at Clareview Recreation Centre Soccer.
Wolves had advanced to the finals after beating the Olds Broncos 3-2 Friday and Medicine Hat Rattlers on penalty kicks Saturday.
With a bye, the Ooks had edged Concordia University of Edmonton Thunder 1-0 Saturday with Kennedy Ballam scoring.
Ooks opened scoring Sunday with Kaily Mohn notching a penalty kick at the 12-minute mark.
Wolves would tie it up at the 20-minute frame with Janai Martens tapping in a long indirect kick.
The go-ahead and winning goal came with seven minutes remaining in regulation; Megan Loyns heading in a Sidney Doblanko corner kick.
"We work a lot on set pieces and during the latter part of the season we saw a handful of them coming along and going in," said Ooks coach Carol Holt
"It was a real grind for us today. Usually we have had really good games against them. When we scored early today you think we would have carried on. They have some strong players up front that have scored quite a few goals this year and they were trying to release those players for a final surge. But we were defending well and (Ooks goalie) Kailey Harder was outstanding in goal with good ball distribution."
Of the Wolves, Holt said: "They have been a team that has rallied this year and they work hard. They may not have a deep team bench wise but they work hard as a team."
Bronze went to the Thunder with a 2-0 final against the Rattlers.
The Ooks and Wolves now travel east to play in Montreal Soccer Stadium November 7-12, 2016 for the 2016 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association Women's Soccer Championships hosted by College Ahuntsic.
Ooks silver medalled last year at the 2015 CCAA championships hosted by Fleming College in Peterborough, Ontario losing 5-1 to Cegep Garneau (RSEQ).
Ooks have captured and additional three CCAA silver and a bronze since 2010.
"I think we will take tomorrow off and then regroup with our strength and conditioning coach to have a good stretch," said Holt of preparation for the CCAA tournament. "Then we will have a couple of field runs and watch video."
