Edmonton, AB (February 25, 2019) – The Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) is pleased to announce Emma Holmes of the Red Deer College Queens has been selected as the 2018-19 ACAC Women's Volleyball South Rookie of the Year.
Emma had a tremendous first year to begin her ACAC Volleyball career, helping a young RDC Queens team (16-8) finish second in the south with 32 points. In league categories typically dominated by veteran student-athletes, the five-foot-ten outside hitter finished tenth with 202 kills and 13th with 2.38 kills per set. In 24 matches, she scored a total of 232 points for the Queens and helped her team complete the regular season as one of the hottest groups in the ACAC. The Red Deer College Queens won eight of their past ten matches and 15 of their last 18 conference matches.
Queens Head Coach Chris Wandler is impressed by Emma's motivation and play in her inaugural year in the ACAC, and sees potential for further development. "Emma has drive and the more she touches the ball the more she thrives," he says. "For her to finish in the top of the ACAC with a much more experienced group goes to show how much upside Emma has in her game. She has a lot of space to grow her game, which is exciting."
The Bachelor of Kinesiology student puts the team before personal accomplishments. "I would think if you asked Emma about being named the Rookie of the Year, she would downplay her talents and quietly give the credit to her teammates for helping her achieve this honour," says Wandler. "It's just the type of person she is, humble and giving."
Emma, who calls Red Deer home, was also named to the ACAC Women's Volleyball South All-Conference team.
This prestigious award was presented to Emma at the 2019 ACAC Women's Volleyball Banquet & Award Presentations held on Wednesday, February 20 at Canyon Meadows Golf & Country Club in Calgary, Alberta.
