ACAC Women's Volleyball Championship Preview

ACAC Women's Volleyball Championship Preview

by ACAC Sports Writer Curtis J. Phillips

For the seventh consecutive year in a row the Briercrest Clippers have advanced to the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Women's Volleyball Championships.

During that time-span, their championships journey has taken them to Camrose, Grande Prairie, Lloydminster, Olds and Red Deer twice.

They came home with ACAC gold in 2015-2016 and ACAC silver in 2017-2018.

This year the Caronport, Saskatchewan based school is once again coming to Alberta, heading to Calgary for the 2018-2019 ACAC Women's Volleyball Championships to be held Feb. 21-23, 2019 and hosted by the Ambrose University Lions.

The Clippers, finishing with a record of 20 Matches Won 4 Matches Lost 65 Sets Won 24 Sets Lost, placed first in the ACAC South Conference and will be looking to key players including Mia Harder, Ashley Erickson and Becky Garner (289 kills 58 service aces) to lead the way.

Garner, a 5-foot-10 hitter from Surrey, British Columbia, who played for the Pacific Western Athletic Association's Columbia Bible College Bearcats for two years before transferring to Briercrest for the 2017-2018 campaign, recorded 165 kills, 42 service aces and 167 digs in 2017-2018.

Of leaving the Abbotsford, British Columbia based-school to relocate to Saskatchewan, Garner (enrolled in BA Humanities) said: "Moving away from home was tough for me. I know that God brought me to Briercrest for a reason."

"Nolan (Weinmaster) is a great head coach and it is a pretty awesome school and this year being the community life leader is awesome. I just check in with all of the girls and we are a connection point for them and we get to be part of their journey."

"It is a tight-knit community and we have so many fans that come out to our games."

Asked if there are any pitfalls moving from a community of 141,000 population to 994, Garner, 21, laughed at first and then responded: "You have to go for a 20-minute drive to get to Starbucks, I love my Starbucks."

A member of Team BC Gold medal women's volleyball team at the 2015 Western Canada Summer Games held in Fort McMurray, Alberta, Garner is excited about ACAC post season play.

"We are really looking forward to it. We have to stick together and continue to play our games. One point-at-a-time mentality is the key for us."
