Lions Defend Home Court Against Visiting Broncos

Friday night in the Lions Den, the Lady Lions took care of business against the winless Olds College Broncos in straight sets, remaining undefeated at home after three weekends of play. 3rd year middle Ali Leskow (6 kills, 2 aces, 1 block) took home Player of the Game honours for the home team while 3rd year libero Clara Serrano (10 digs) was the Broncos' top performer of the night.

Ambrose leapt to an early 10-3 lead, but the Broncos battled hard and tied the game up at 15-15. The aggressive serving of Emily Zaleschuk (2 aces, 7 digs) was the main catalyst for Olds' comeback, as well as the attacking of Megan Gleddie and team captain Karley Dieken. Tied 18-18, Lions middle Willow Lewington took to the service line and went on a 5 point run to give her team the cushion they needed to close out the set. After a long rally, Lions setter Sarah Jan ran Leskow in the middle for the set-winning kill at 24-20.

The second set started much like the first, Ambrose grabbing a 10-3 lead behind strong serving. This time, however, there would be no comeback, as the Lions held their lead by an average of 6 points throughout the set before an attack out of the rightside by Lewington would put the home team up 2-0.

Olds maintained a lead through the first half of the third set, leading 12-10 after a block by Broncos middle Janeen Pellatt. The Lions once again used an impressive serving performance, this time from leftside Maddy Williscroft, to go on an 8-1 run and take a big lead heading into the last points of the game. On game point it was a Lions middle run to Willow Lewington, off the Broncos block and out the back, that sealed up the game and gave the Lions their 4th win of the season.

Matching up again tomorrow night in Olds, catch the Broncos fight for their first win of the season in front of their home crowd while the Lions will seek their 4th win in a row.
