Riding the momentum from what has become an outstanding season, the Lions kept their win streak alive and have now won 12 of their last 13 games. In a first for Ambrose volleyball, the home team defeated the Red Deer Queens in straight sets to inch closer to the #2 spot on the rankings.
Ambrose controlled the first set through tough serving and attacking, with the leftsides carrying most of the offense to start the match. Jeena Johner and Maddy Williscroft, the Lions' rookie outsides, killed 7 and 9 balls respectively, while picking up 8 digs each. Lions Player of the Game Jess Zacharias put up 24 assists to go along with 8 digs and some of the hardest serves the team had to offer. A pair of Queens errors ended the first set at 25-20.
Red Deer got off to a much stronger start in the second set, opening up a 5 point lead right off the bat and holding it for the majority of the set. The Lions were unable to secure a lead of their own until the very end, going up 22-21 and scoring a few crucial points to steal the second set. The typically impregnable blocking of the Queens, led by 4th year rightside and Red Deer POG McKenna Barthel (7 kills, 4 digs, 2 blocks), was lacklustre for the visiting team last night as the Ambrose offense outscored the visitors 30-23.
The third set saw a much closer contest, despite the Queens continually shooting themselves in the foot with errors. Down 19-22, the Lions block came through in crunch time and shut down the Queens outsides to make a desperate final push and steal the third set. The home team was down 24-25, but a Queens error and two blocks for the Lions completed the sweep, ending on a one-on-one stuff block on Miranda Dawe by Ambrose rightside Ashleigh McKinnon.
The Lions travel to Red Deer tonight and will rematch the Queens at 4:30 pm. Ambrose has never won in the RDC gym, and a win would tie the two teams up at 2nd place and bring their records even at 15-7.
