OLDS, Alta. - The NAIT Ooks are one step away from a return to the ACAC women's hockey final.
NAIT held control of proceedings throughout the night en route to a 3-0 victory over the Olds College Broncos in Game 1 of their three-game series at the Town of Olds Sports Complex on Thursday.
Natsumi Kurokawa, Cass Lyttle and Delaney Martin scored for the Ooks, while Jordan McMillan added two assists.
Kaitlyn Slator was relatively untested in the NAIT goal, making 10 saves for the shutout while Broncos goaltender Lexi Bruce made 24 saves in a losing effort.
After a fast-paced start to the contest, the Ooks opened the scoring just over eight minutes in, as a sustained NAIT forecheck forced the Broncos into a turnover, with Kurokawa beating Bruce high from the top of the crease to give the Ooks a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes.
NAIT extended its lead midway through the period, as a shot block from Lyttle turned into a 2-on-1 with McMillan. McMillan's initial shot was stopped, but Lyttle was there to pounce on the rebound, with her shorthanded marker making it 2-0 Ooks heading to the third.
The Ooks wrapped up the scoring early in the third, as a wide shot from McMillan bounced off the end boards and found Martin, who fired it into the open net as Bruce couldn't get back across the crease.
Lyttle earned player of the game honours for NAIT, while Tori Chenier picked up the award for Olds College.
NAIT can wrap up the series tomorrow night in Edmonton, as Game 2 is set for a 7 p.m. puck drop on Friday.
