OLDS, Alta. - The NAIT Ooks broke some hearts on Valentine's Day, erupting for eight unanswered goals to knock off the Olds College Broncos 8-2 at the Town of Olds Sports Complex on Thursday.
Brittney Savard scored a hat trick and added an assist for NAIT (17-2-2), who clinched the top seed for the ACAC Playoffs with the victory.
Carlin Boey, Verca Kuzelova and Delaney Martin each had a goal and two assists, Megan Leblanc had a goal and an assist, and Wynona Creyke also scored for the Ooks, while Kaitlyn Slator made 16 saves for the victory.
Megan Quesnel and Abby Webster scored for the Broncos (6-14-1), while Lexi Bruce made 31 saves for Olds College.
Special teams told the story, as five of NAIT's eight goals came on the powerplay.
The Broncos charged out of the gate to start an eventful first period, as Sarah Jarvis kept a clearing attempt in the NAIT zone, then fed Quesnel in front of the net to give Olds College at 1-0 lead just 45 seconds in.
Olds College extended its lead on the powerplay four minutes later, as Webster redirected a Fiona Milligan point shot past Slator to put the Broncos up two.
However, the Ooks found their counter attack midway through the first, as a Broncos clearing attempt found its way to Boey. She cycled around the net, then found Savard with her centering pass, beating Bruce to cut the Broncos lead in half.
The tide turned definitively with 6.1 seconds left in the first, as Leblanc worked her way in front of the net to beat Bruce to tie the game at 2-2 heading into the first intermission.
From there, the Ooks exploded offensively, with striking three more times in both the second and third periods to run away with the game.
Savard earned player of the game honours for the Ooks, while Milligan took the award for the Broncos.
NAIT and Olds College will renew hostilities for the final time in the regular season in Edmonton on Saturday at 6 p.m.
