Nov. 2, 2018 The Kodiaks sure know how to impress a crowd.
The fifth ranked Kodiaks men's volleyball squad put on a show for a sizable Val Matteotti Gymnasium crowd on Jr. & Sr. High School Appreciation Night, defeating the Briercrest Clippers 3-1 (25-15, 25-22, 20-25, 25-22).
It was a record setting night for fifth-year Kodiak Dax Whitehead, who became just the fourth ACAC men's volleyball player to reach 1,000 kills for his career.
Whitehead's seven kills brings his career total to 1,003, which moves him just 30 kills behind Keyano College's Alwyn Pich for third on the ACAC career kill list.
The seventh straight win helped the Kodiaks remain perfect on the season, while Briercrest falls to 3-4.
Lethbridge was led by 16 kills from Carter Hansen, including seven first set kills that helped the Kodiaks jump out to an early lead.
Showing their trademark scrappiness, Briercrest regrouped and refused to go down quietly. After narrowly dropping the second set, the Clippers used a mid-set rally in set three to take control and extend the game.
Lethbridge refused to let this one go to five. The fourth set was tied at five until a 5-0 Kodiaks run, and though the Clippers inched close to tying, the Kodiaks used solid all-around team play to secure the 3-1 victory.
Players of The Game:
Kodiaks: #3 Michael Svab
Clippers: #5 Mitch Erickson
Zach Wikenheiser of Lethbridge made 37 assists tonight while Briercrest's Caleb Schnitzer made 30. Bryton codd was able to put away 13 kills for the Clippers.
The Kodiaks will look to make it eight in a row in a Saturday rematch with the Clippers. First serve is set for 3 p.m. from the Val Matteotti Gymnasium
