CALGARY, ALTA., (Oct. 26, 2018) - Mazin Choufi broke a scoreless tie, and moved his Concordia University of Edmonton Thunder men's soccer team one step closer to the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) title.
Choufi's goal came after 78 minutes of scoreless play following a turnover from Red Deer College's Thomas Favel to lead his Thunder to a 1-0 victory in Friday morning's ACAC Men's Soccer Championship quarter-final game played at SAIT's Cohos Commons Field.
Red Deer's season comes to an end. During Friday's game, they could not find a way to apply pressure offensively. Defensively, a number of turnover allowed the Thunder to put shots on net.
Choufi was understandably named his team's Player of the Game. Matthew Elphick earned the honour for the Kings.
The Thunder now move to Saturday morning's semifinal matchup against the SAIT Trojans, who earned a bye into the game by finish atop the ACAC's South Division with a 12-0 mark.
Despite not playing against each other in the regular season due to being in different divisions, the teams have recent history. SAIT beat the Thunder 1-0 for the ACAC bronze medal just last season.
