The SAIT Trojans men's soccer team defeated the Lakeland College Rustlers 3-0 on Saturday in an Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) match up at SAIT Cohos Commons Field in Calgary.
Jake Walmsley opened the scoring for the Trojans and was the only goal of the first half. In the second half, Armando Garcia fired a shot past the Rustlers goaltender at the 48th minute. Nearly 30 minutes later, Dean Northover scored the third and final tally of the game, assisted by Danny Arevalo.
"We started breaking them down by quick passing," said Trojans assistant coach Daniel Broadhurst. "In the first half, we were trying to go long a little too much."
An intense game that featured some physical play in the first half set the tone for the Trojans win.
"Take it as a compliment honestly - you're going to get hacked if you're a high-calibre player," he added. "Yeah it sucks to get hit like that, but team spirit is high and we all know that we need to stay focused on the game plan."
The Trojans improve to 3-0, while the Rustlers move to 0-1-1.
Jake Walmsley was the Trojans Player of the Game and the Rustlers Player of the Game was Chase Cal.
SAIT returns to action tomorrow afternoon at 2pm when they welcome the Red Deer College Kings to town.
