Broncos unable to overcome first half deficit to RDC

Broncos unable to overcome first half deficit to RDC Olds College Broncos men's basketball team lost 104-73 to the Red Deer College Kings in the Olds College Student Appreciation Night Friday, Nov. 8 at the Ralph Klein Centre.

RDC scored the first basket of the game moments in before a Yallah Sumo steal led to an Alec Hillman three-pointer to give Olds a 3-2 lead. The teams exchanged baskets and free throws for the following few minutes until RDC scored a three-pointer to give them a 9-5 lead and force an OIds timeout at the 6:21 mark. RDC extended their lead to 13-5 out of the timeout before a Muktar Mohamed jump shot ended their run. RDC responded to take a 21-7 lead before an Anders Eklund three stalled their run temporarily at 21-10. Muktar Mohamed scored three free throws to cut the lead to 26-13 but RDC continued to flex their muscles and built up a 34-13 lead after one quarter.

The Broncos were unable to cut into the RDC lead to start the second quarter, falling behind 50-22 half way into the quarter. The teams kept exchanging baskets, with RDC gradually increasing their lead. Mohamed Eltassi had a nice drive to the basket and Yallah Sumo also had a nice fake and bank off the backboard, but the second quarter ended with RDC holding a 65-31 lead.

The Broncos opened up the third quarter on a 6-2 run to make the score 67-37 for RDC. The Broncos scored another basket to make the score 67-39 with four minutes left in the quarter before RDC finally scored their second basket of the half to extend their lead to 69-39. Muktar Mohamed responded moments later to cut back into the lead and again on the free throw line to make the score 69-43.  After a small RDC run Colton Murrell made two free throws to cut the lead to 73-47. Mohamed Eltassi took another nice drive to the net at the end of the quarter to make the score 77-51 after three quarters.

RDC responded in the final quarter, building up an 89-56 lead before Muktar scored while being fouled to make the score 89-59 half way through the quarter. Colton Murrell had a strong fourth quarter hitting several three-point shots to bring the score to 102-67. The Broncos were able to go on a short run to end the game, losing 104-73.

Player of the game for Red Deer was Spencer Klassen with 17 points, four assists and a game high four steals and the Pit Barbecue Player of the Game for the Broncos was Yallah Sumo with a team high 16 points to go with five rebounds and two assists.

Red Deer held the advantage in the game in rebounds 36-27, assists 24-13, steals 11-7 and blocks 4-1. Alec Hilman had a team high six rebounds, John Kaweesi had a team high four assists and two steals and Colton Murrell had the lone block for the Broncos.

The Broncos host Lethbridge College Friday, Nov. 15 for Cancer Awareness Night. Game time is 8:00 pm.
