Opponent: University of Alberta Augustana Vikings
Location: Syncrude Sport & Wellness Centre - Canadian Natural Gymnasium
Keyano Huskies 72 University of Alberta Augustana Vikings 71
Keyano Huskies try to establish a low game at the very start, passing the ball inside to 6-foot-8 Noah Horobetz Simpson (2nd year, University Studies, Winnipeg Manitoba) for a few well-earned scores.
With Stefan Jovcic (3rd year, Education, Mississauga Ontario) dominating the defensive glass, the Huskies go in at halftime 41-28. The 41st point came off of a Jacob Simmons ( (4th year, Business Administration, Fort McMurray Alberta) alley-oop as he lobbed the ball to a cutting Jovcic, the ball going directly into the hoop instead of into the hands of Jovcic.
The crowd is delighted and Simmons' dad Mike Simmons, is in the stands shaking his head in disbelief.
Play is a bit scrappy in the third period at times with play turning into a track meet but the Huskies hold on for a 56-47 advantage.
Some savvy play by Vikings' Nathan Bowie brings the visitors back to cut the lead 56-53 with Huskies coach Jeremy Wielenga calling timeout nearly two minutes into the fourth period.
A Bowie three gives the Vikings a 59-56 lead with 5:59 remaining. Huskies shots rimming out.
Huskies regroup and find an effective fast break to rebuild the lead...a lead that soon dissipates as the Vikings creep back down 71-69 with 25 seconds on the clock.
A crucial mental mistake by the Huskies with.8 ticks on the clock allows the Vikings a final chance to win or tie the game.
Bowie is fouled on a three-point attempt with 0.8 seconds. Having previously shot 8-for-8 in the game he misses his first but makes his second and third for a 71-71 tie.
Huskies' Simpson is fouled on the inbound pass and goes down hard on the hardwood and is unable to return to the game.
Replacing Simpson for the two free-throw attempts, with 0.3 remaining, is Arnold Nandwa (3rd year, Education, Fort McMurray Alberta)
Nandwa is a player every coach wants as he stays positive despite lack of playing time. He is the 13th man on a 12 man roster.
In 2017-2018 he managed 11 points the entire year while playing for the Lakeland Rustlers.
Last year for the Huskies he did not leave the bench at all during the regular season.
This is right out of Hoosiers folks.
He misses his first shot but calmly hits mesh on the second shot for the win.
Nandwa is named Huskies Player of the Game.
Bowie gets POG honours for the visitors with 25 points.
