Jan. 4, 2019 - The Kodiaks kicked of the New Year in Lethbridge against the Medicine Hat Rattlers for the first game of a weekend home-and-home series.
The Rattlers struck first to get on the scoreboard, but the Kodiaks followed close behind, applying pressure early on. Kodiaks Michael Clemons proved to be a dominant force on the court with two early steals ultimately leading to Kodiaks points, giving them the extra push they needed to take the first quarter 18-16 over the Rattlers.
A series of foul shots from the Rattlers put them back into the game quickly in the second quarter. The team proved to be well matched, going point-for-point throughout most of the quarter until a string of Kodiak fouls gave the Rattlers an opportunity to pull ahead. The Kodiaks managed to rally back to lead the game 39-36 heading into the second half.
While the alternating points trend continued into the second half of the game, the Rattlers were able to sneak a few extra baskets by the Kodiaks defense to overtake the Kodiaks 61-59 heading into the final quarter with eight points from Kieron Burgess.
The Rattlers came out in the final quarter with momentum but the Kodiaks trailed closely behind. Clemons continued his hot streak with another steal, giving him his 210th career steal and setting the new ACAC record. Building off the excitement of Clemons achievement, the Kodiaks fought back to earn a 80-75 victory over the Rattlers.
With this win the Kodiaks record advances to 6-3, while the Rattlers fall to 6-4 in the season.
Both teams will be back in action tomorrow night in Medicine Hat to finish out this weekends series.
