The Sound of Basketballs at Inaugural Event

What is that strange sound? Race cars applying their brakes? A herd of excited seals?
No…it is the beautiful sound of 90 pairs of sneakers as the players stop, pivot and run.
It is a magical musical beat of sorts accompanied by the bouncing basketballs.
Welcome to the inaugural ACAC/CIS Preseason Showcase at Edmonton’s Saville Community Sports Centre and presented by Basketball Alberta.
”Many people have probably thought about it before but the combination of having 12 courts available (nine FIBA sized courts for play which may also be converted into three main courts) now with the Saville Community Sports Centre allows us to have this magnitude of teams,” said Jef Bailey, Communications Coordinator for Basketball Alberta of the fact that there will be a combination of 12 women’s and 14 men’s teams in the two day (September 28-29) tournament which guarantees each team three games.
What is really impressive is that of the 38 post-secondary basketball teams in the province, a total of 26 of them will be represented!
The Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference will be represented on both the men’s and women’s side by the University of Alberta Augustana Vikings, Concordia University College of Alberta Thunder, Grant MacEwan University Griffins, Grande Prairie Regional College Wolves, Lakeland College Rustlers, Medicine Hat College Rattlers, NAIT Ooks and Red Deer College Kings and Queens, St Mary’s University College Lightning, SAIT Trojans and The Kings University College Eagles.
Women’s competition will be rounded out by the University of Calgary Dinos and the Mount Royal University Cougars.
The men’s side will also feature the DInos, Cougars and University of Golden Bears.
“We are looking to have it as a celebration of post-secondary sports and for an opportunity to have a showcase event where we highlight post-secondary basketball in the province,” said Bailey.
“I definitely think there is the opportunity for a lot to come out of this. It is a first-year event to gauge what we need to do next. The response so far has been fantastic and we see it growing into a larger event.”
From a player standpoint, Bailey, who wore the Kings Eagles uniform graduating in 2003, says this: “I think it is fantastic event coming from a former players perspective. It gives you an opportunity to compete against teams you may not be able to get a chance to play against.
“A lot of time you get the recognition only for the U of A Golden Bears (basketball) in Edmonton or the Dinos in Calgary. This event gives people and high school student/athletes a chance to see that there are multiple options if they want to play post-secondary.”
The Showcase coincides with Basketball Alberta’s annual coaching conference, and is designed to – as the name says – showcase Alberta college and university hoops.
