Rustlers ride Broncos to Win

01/29/2012...Fort McMurray, Alberta - Lakeland Rustlers have the X on their back as defending champions and they knew that Friday at the start of Futsal Tournament #1 hosted by the Keyano College Huskies in Fort McMurray.

Little did they realize though that the road would be a wee bit bumpy as they needed to go into a shootout after tying the Olds Broncos 2-2 in regulation for the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference championship match played earlier today.

Staged at the Alberta Building Trades Field inside the Syncrude Sport & Wellness Centre, the two teams were scoreless in the first 20-minute half with an Omar Amador header opening the scoring 1-0 Lakeland  five minutes into the second half.

Olds David Garnett tied it at 1-1 halfway through with Lakeland’s Sven Waelechi scoring on a low line drive with 5:42 remaining in regulation 2-1 Rustlers.

Bronco’s Garnett tied the game at 2-2 on a breakaway with 2:06 remaining.

Lakeland won on the shootout 4-2 with each team having used four of the five allocated shooters.

Rustlers had advanced to the final with a 4-0 win over Ambrose Lions, 6-2 against the host Huskies and 5-2 versus Medicine Hat Rattlers.

Broncos advanced from their pool with a 2-2 tie against Mount Royal Cougars, 3-2 score to get past the Rattlers and a decision over the Huskies.

“Olds is better organized than they were last year and hey have some athletic players…they will have a chance all season long,” said Rustlers coach Kevin Wagner of his opponent. “We are satisfied the way we performed and we kicked off our season fairly well and hopefully all the training will pay off.”


Huskies men won 5-3 against the Medicine Hat Rattlers for the bronze medal in an intensive battle.

Four-and-a-half minutes into the game Rattlers Derrick Hammel scored. It was then the Raigoza magic time, scoring on a penalty shot score with 1:50 in the half followed by a quick take-a-way and breakaway to beat the keeper with 35 seconds left. 2-1 Huskies at the half.

Rattlers Bryce Henderson score off a rebound 90 seconds into the second half tying 2-2 only to have Raigoza score on a brilliant goal 90 seconds later on a shot from the centre of the field – 3-2 Huskies!

With 57 seconds remaining Sam Andrews was on the receiving end of a nifty Raigoza lob to make it 4-2.

Playing one man up due to the ejection of Rattlers player, Huskies Alex Otti scored the Huskies final goal.

“It was great to score the winning goal,” said Andrews. “It shows that we can play in this league when we have a full team out there.”

Huskies only had one sub in the opening match while four in the bronze medal game.

“It was nice to score the three goals but more importantly it was a W in the win column,” said the affable Raigoza

Tournament #2 for Futsal is scheduled for Feb. 10-12 in Calgary at Mount Royal. ACAC championships March 10-12, 2012 hosted by the Rattlers.
