Olds College Basketball First Ever Win Versus CIS Opponent, Williams Averages 35ppg
10/21/201.. Winnipeg, MB - In a year of what will be many firsts, the Olds College women’s basketball team walked away with the program’s first win versus CIS competition while playing in their first CIS tournament.
Olds College defeated the University of Manitoba 79-75 in the ‘Shoot for the Cure’ Bison Women`s Basketball Invitational tournament on Sunday.
Broncos' guard Jylisa Williams, who poured in 40 points in her first game and 29 points in her second game of the invitational, had another stellar game. She scored 37 points and hit big buckets down the stretch to help the Broncos surge ahead of the Bisons in the fourth quarter.
Williams added seven rebounds, 3 assists, and 7 steals to her 37 points for a nice all around game for Olds College.
After Williams hit a midrange jumper to give the Broncos a two point lead with under a minute to go, the Bisons had two chances to take the lead, but couldn`t connect on two 3 point attempts. From then, Manitoba had to foul to stop the clock. The Broncos knocked down their free throw attempts and iced the game.
The Bisons held a 12 point lead in the second half and as much as 11 into the fourth before a final push by the Broncos as they surged to the four point road victory.
The Broncos nearly shocked the basketball world on Friday night when they narrowly lost to the University of Winnipeg Wesmen 79-77. The talent laden Wesmen are sure to challenge for a Canada West playoff spot this year. Almost more amazing than her 40 points was Williams 15 rebounds as she was at the top of the Bronco’s zone all night.
Williams’ performances have brought national attention as CIS coaches from coast to coast have been inquiring about her availability next season.
Just to show the Broncos aren’t a one man show, 4th year captain Jerri-lyn Chisholm averaged 9 rebounds over the three games and in the Manitoba victory 1st year post Paige Bevan had 16 points and 7 rebounds and Teanna Rowe added 7 assists.
“We had a horrible time in Edmonton the weekend before,” explains Carrick, “this team, this weekend is the team Jen Donofrio and I recruited, I don’t know who those other people were who were wearing our uniforms in Edmonton. We had a great week of practice and are just finally starting to get healthy.”
