Marmot Basin/Hostelling International Jasper Female Athlete of the Week
Marriya Jenkins
Concordia University College of Alberta
Cross Country Running

In just her second year of ACAC competition, Marriya is an exemplar of what can happen when you combine natural ability with an uncompromising work ethic. In her first ACAC Championship, Marriya took Silver, passing the third place finisher just meters before the finish line. In Saturday’s race, Marriya had pulled well clear of her closest competitor by the 2.5 km mark. Coach Matt Norminton's only advice to his young protégé at this point was "to not take her foot off the accelerator until the finish" and Jenkins took this advice to heart, winning the race in her second fastest 5 km time ever (fastest time of the 2012 season), over a minute clear of the second place finisher and almost a minute faster than four weeks ago on the same course to pick up her first ever ACAC Championship.

Congratulations Marriya on your golden performance!

Cailyn Newman
NAIT
Women's Soccer

Cailyn helped her NAIT Ooks women’s soccer team repeat as ACAC champions this past weekend with a 3-1 victory over the Concordia Thunder in the final. Newman was selected as the tournament’s top defender and was also the Player of the Game in the Ooks 3-1 semi-final victory over Medicine Hat. Cailyn was also recently named to the ACAC All-Conference team despite missing several games with a shoulder injury mid-season. “Cailyn is simply a phenomenal defender,” said head coach Carole Holt. “She is always in the right position and in our semi-final versus Medicine Hat, Cailyn made several amazing tackles that stalled the Rattlers’ attack.”

Cailyn is a third year Culinary Arts student from Sherwood Park, AB.
