NAIT Women’s basketball team raises money for Breast Cancer
The NAIT Ooks’ women’s basketball team will be holding a Breast Cancer Fundraiser and Silent Auction on Saturday February 6 during one of their regular season games. The entire team will be in pink uniforms with a pink ribbon on each of their jerseys. Even the referees will have pink whistles, as the EBOA is running a concurrent Breast Cancer Awareness week in the basketball community from within their referee association.
Dale-Marie Cumberbatch, the captain of the team, has been working on the idea of a Breast Cancer fundraiser for about two years and is happy to see her idea come to fruition. Her aunt, Patricia Warrick née Cumberbatch, died from breast cancer five years ago on February 6th – the date of this first annual fundraiser. “This fundraiser will be very personal for me. I want to raise awareness about the disease and raise money for research,” says Dale-Marie.
The official name of the event is the NAIT “OOKPiNK” Breast Cancer Awareness Basketball Game, sponsored by Footlocker Canada. (The official mascot for the team is the Ookpik so there is a play on words there.)
