Lakeland to Host 2013 CCAA Women's Volleyball Championship

1/12/2012 - Lloydminster, AB... For the first time in Lakeland College’s history, the college will host a Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) championship. Lakeland announced today that it will host the 2013 CCAA women’s volleyball championship. Matches will take place from March 7-9, 2013 at the Lloydminster campus gymnasium. All of the matches will be webcast.

“Lloydminster has a history of hosting great sporting events and we look forward to continuing that tradition. I know our gym will be packed with people who can’t wait to not only cheer on our Rustlers, but also see some of the other top teams in the CCAA. We look forward to sharing our college and our community with teams and fans from across the nation,” says Glenn Charlesworth, president of Lakeland College.

Lakeland College will celebrate its centenary in 2013 and Alan Rogan, coordinator of recreation and athletics at Lakeland, believes that hosting the national championship will be one of the highlights of the centennial celebrations.

“We are confident that with the support of Lakeland College and the surrounding communities that this prestigious event will not only be a memorable one for the competing student-athletes from around the country but for anyone who is involved in or has an opportunity to watch the event,” he says.

Rogan was quick to point out that the recent success of the women’s volleyball program is one of the main reasons Lakeland was selected to host the national tournament. “Thanks to the efforts of our coaching staff, our women’s team has been very strong in recent years. We finished fourth in the province last season and earlier this year we climbed to number five in the CCAA rankings,” says Rogan.

Eight teams participate in the national event including five provincial champions, a second team from the host conference, and two wildcard spots. While Lakeland College is assured a spot as a host, coach Austin Dyer says the Rustlers would love to earn their way to the championship by winning the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) title.

“We have tried our best to raise the bar and have high expectations of our athletes and ourselves as the coaching staff.  All the hard work of my athletes and my assistant coaches has paid off as in the past three years we have floored a very competitive volleyball team. The expectation is that this trend will continue as our program grows stronger. Next year will be another stepping stone for the athletes as they will have a chance to train for and play in the biggest volleyball competition in their volleyball careers,” says Dyer.

In addition to volleyball, Lakeland College has basketball, cross-country running, curling, futsal, and soccer teams that compete in the ACAC. Lakeland also has rowing and rodeo teams that compete against squads from other colleges and universities.
