Ladies of Troy Knock Off Defending Champs

EDMONTON – SAIT women’s basketball once again showed their dominance over the Lethbridge Kodiaks with an 84-72 victory, giving the Trojans their first ACAC Championship since 2001.  The Ladies of Troy dominated the ACAC, finishing with a 23-1 record and are now poised for a run at an CCAA title.

“It was definite a total team effort” said head coach Donovan Martin.  “We came out strong and set the tone.”  The Trojans benefited from some hot shooting and some tenacious defense which propelled them to a 20 point half time lead.

The Kodiaks showed their champion fight as they outscored the Trojans 45-37 in the second half.  “They’re a tough team” said Martin.  “They proved that they would never give up but the girls responded well and we were able to hang on for the win.”

Leading the way for the Trojans was Kim Lee (Toronto, ON) with 38 points.  Lee also added six rebound and seven steals to her impressive stat line. Brittany Pekar (Calgary, AB) and Rachel Caputo (Edmonton, AB) also contributed with 11 points each.

“The big difference was our composure at the line” said Martin.  The Trojans were an impressive 84% from the foul line.  “Good teams make their shots down the stretch and in the end that made the difference.”

Hoisting the ACAC banner means that the Trojans to will advance to the CCAA Championships in Kelowna, running from March 18-20.
