Griffin Enters National Female Apprentice Coach Program
MacEwan Griffins Athletics is pleased to announce Teresa Wallsten has been named one of 20 women accepted into the 2010-11 CCAA Female Apprentice Coach Program. Funded by Sport Canada, this program is run through the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association (CCAA) with the objective of providing an avenue for graduated female student-athletes to become involved in coaching at the national level, mentoring under a qualified head coach.
Teresa, a former Griffin player and current Assistant Coach with the MacEwan Women’s Basketball team, has worked with many youth club programs over the past nine years and is entering her second year as an assistant coach with MacEwan.
"I believe that this will be an incredible learning opportunity and I feel confident that the skills that I will learn over this year will be a great foundation for my coaching career," said Teresa.
She began her athletic career with the Griffin’s Women’s Basketball team before completing her Education degree at the University of Alberta. She will be apprenticing under mentor coach Rob Poole, Griffins Women’s Head Coach and Alberta Colleges Athletics Conference (ACAC) 2009-10 Coach of the Year.
To help build her coaching foundation Poole is the perfect candidate. Rob has an extensive basketball knowledge stemming from a 37-year period as a player, coach, official, and administrator from community to collegiate level. Rob is a Level 3 certified Basketball coach, and Technical Course instructor for the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP). His wealth of knowledge and experience paired with Teresa’s work ethic and passion is sure to be a winning combination.
