Cougars are Hockey Queens
03/18/2012...Edmonton, Alberta - Mount Royal Cougars claimed their fifth Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference Women’s Hockey Championship last night defeating the host Grant MacEwan Griffins 3-0 to claim the best-of-five series 3-1.
Cougars had lost Friday 3-2 in overtime but won the first two games 2-1 and 3-2 last weekend
Cougars head coach Scott Rivet was proud of his team’s performance: “It feels good. It’s been a long season; a lot of hard work has gone into it. It’s nice to see the girls rewarded for their efforts. It was a gusty effort, it was a great series, it was hard fought and I thought it was tight all the way to the end. It’s nice to see the kids come through and get rewarded for their eight months of hard work.”
Of the hard hitting affair Rivet said: “It has been a physical series. I thought the officials did a good job of calling what needed to be called and letting the girls play. It’s a physical game and both teams wanted it really bad tonight and I thought both teams competed really hard so as a result there was a lot of crashing and banging.”
Griffins coach Lindsay McAlpine was gracious in defeat: “In every sport there is always a winner and a loser. That’s why we keep coming back. You search for the feeling they have and you play for the highs and you play through the lows. Of course it doesn’t feel good standing on the other side of it but I couldn’t walk out of this rink more proud to coach those 20 girls.”
McAlpine is proud of the Griffins overall season: ““I think we grew as a group, we faced adversity in various points in the season and I think it just made us stronger. One of my favourite quotes is that ‘adversity doesn’t make character, it reveals it’ and this team has so much character. I couldn’t have asked for a better season, obviously a win would’ve been the cherry on top but just to reiterate again, I’m so proud of our girls and what they’ve done and how far they’ve come this season.”
Prior to Friday night's game the Cougars have been unbeatable this post-season going a perfect 5-0 led by captain Chrissy Hodgson (2 goals, 3 assists) and Jesslyn Legasse (2 goals, 3 assists).
