Athlete Success Week Underway at Olds College

 8/28/2012

Olds - Over 100 young athletes converged on the Fine Arts Centre on the Olds College Campus on Sunday night for the kickoff of Athlete Success Week, an introductory week to the world of college athletics put on by Broncos Athletics.

Athlete Success Week – the third held by the college’s athletics department – is taking on a bit of a different tone for this year as it is the inaugural season for Broncos teams competing in Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) team sports, including men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s Volleyball, and men’s and women’s Soccer.

During the kickoff Sunday night, Broncos athletes heard from nutrition and training specialists; the department’s sports therapy contractor; sports information contractor; the game-day coordinator; along with the director of Athletics/Health and Wellness, and the two athletics supervisors.

The week is designed to provide current and prospective Broncos athletes with the best information about how to maximize their athletic potential in balance with their academic careers. The week will also allow coaches to review expectations for the coming season and introduce athletes to the schedule and training regime for the initial ACAC season and the ongoing ACAL program in both volleyball and basketball.

“We’re giving you guys an opportunity here,” Fitness and Athletics Supervisor Bob Murray told the gathering of athletes. “It will be up to you to become the best athletes you can be.”

After the introduction and welcome, athletes then moved on to sport-specific meetings with coaches and athletics administration.

The meetings were the first gathering for most of the sports other than soccer. Athletes in the ACAC soccer/futsal program have been on campus for over a week preparing for the Sept. 8 league openers being held at the Elks Soccer Park against Medicine Hat College Rattlers.

ACAC tournament sport athletes for sports including golf, cross-country and curling will be on campus next week for orientation.
