ACAC Athletes of the Week February 1 - 7, 2010

Chris Porteus
Red Deer College
Men's Basketball

Chris Porteus scored a total of 43 points, pulled down 19 rebounds, 4 assists and 5 steals in two games against the Mount Royal Cougars. Chris played big minutes for the Kings this past weekend to help RDC attain a 1-1 record vs the defending national champions and 1st place south division leaders. Chris rebounded the ball extremely well and was able to balance his scoring both inside and outside on offence. The RDC Kings are continually improving as a “whole” and are hopeful to be rolling come playoff time.

Chris is a first year Hospitality & Tourism student from Vancouver, BC.

Jie Yung Sim
Concordia University College of Alberta
Badminton

Jie entered the weekend event as the #1 seed among the men’s singles competitors. Jie Yung Sim managed to win the event and secure an ACAC Men’s Singles Gold medal and the right to represent Concordia at the CCAA National Championships. In addition to this honor Jie was also named the CCAA Men’s Badminton player of the month for the ACAC. 

Jie is a second year Science student, who graduated from M.E. Lazerte High School in Edmonton, AB.

Cailin Lissel
Concordia University College of Alberta
Women's Basketball

Fifth year All-Canadian senior guard Cailin Lissel helped to lead Concordia to a  regular season sweep  this past weekend of North Division rival the GPRC Wolves. 

On Friday February 5th, Cailin lead all scorers with 30 points 5 rebounds 4 assists and 4 steals on the way to Concordia’s 76-44 win over the Wolves. Saturday afternoon Lissel would lead all scorers again with 25 points and 4 steals as Concordia would go on to win 89-44. The 55 point weekend increases Cailin’s career total to 1912 points as she closes on 2000 career points with 4 games left in the regular season.

Cailin is a 5th year player from Hinton, AB, who is taking her Bachelor of Arts degree from Concordia University College of Alberta.

Sun Yang
NAIT
Badminton

Yang won her third consecutive ACAC Singles Championship this past weekend at Red Deer College and helped lead the NAIT Ooks to the #1 seed for next weekend's Team Championships. Sun won the Gold without dropping a set, defeating Grace Box from Concordia in the final 21-12, 21-10. Yang posted a perfect 10-0 record on the weekend and showed why she is one of the best female players in the conference.  "After battling several nagging injuries last season, it appears Yang is healthy and once again ready to contend for a National Championship," said Head Coach Jordan Richey. "It is a pleasure to watch her play when she is on top of her game". 
Yang is a third year player and is a first year Business Administration student at NAIT.
