ACAC 2008 Golf Conference Championship

Submitted by P.J. Swales, Red Deer College

September 26th and 27th RDC hosted the ACAC Golf Conference Championships, presented by ATB Financial, at Riverbend Golf Course. Eight Alberta colleges and universities (University of Calgary, Medicine Hat College, Concordia University College, NAIT, Mount Royal College, Lakeland College, Keyano College and RDC) entered golf teams, comprised of 37 men and 14 women advancing from regional play to the Conference Championship.

The weather was cool and sunny on Friday making for excellent golf in fall conditions. On Saturday, however, the weather was brisk with wind making for tough conditions for all participants.

For the second year in a row the University of Calgary won both the Men's and Women's team competitions, also winning the gold in the Individual competitions. Mount Royal earned the silver in both Men's and Women's team finals and for the bronze Lethbridge College men and RDC Women each took home the hardware.

Lauren Diedrichs of the U of C shot a first round of 77 and a sizzling 72 (tying the official Course Record) to finish first with a solid 149 in Women's individual play. U of C's Ashley Nantes and Aryn Flette placed silver and bronze for a full sweep by the U of C team.

In the Men's Individual play U of C golfer Eric Allard took the overall championship firing a two day total of 146. Lethbridge College's Rob Sakamoto finished second with a 150. Finishing closely for the bronze with a 2 day total of 151 was Matt Ostash from Lethbridge.

The staff at Riverbend led by General Manager Larry Thompson and Head Pro Todd Fiske was once again outstanding. The energy and enthusiasm they bring to this championship was clearly seen by all, making this championship truly special. Visiting Coaches and Student-Athletes were unanimous in their praise of the tournament organization and the education/sport environment. The Conference is grateful to ATB Financial and all of the ACAC sponsors for their involvement in the 2008 Golf Conference Championship.
