Badminton Coach of the Year

02/10/2011...Edmonton...Coach Kevin MacAlpine has been associated with Concordia University College for 10 years, first as a student-athlete, then as an Assistant Coach and now as a Head Coach. In the fall of 2009, Kevin moved into the Head Coach position with Thunder Badminton and in his first year, guided his athletes to Silver Medals in each of the ACAC and CCAA Championships. So far in 2010-11, the Thunder have 4 consecutive 2nd place team finishes in ACAC competition.

Ellexis: Defender and Protector of the Badminton Court

02/08/2011...Edmonton, Alberta - The name Ellexis is of Australian origin and means “Defender and Protector.” A perfect fit and apropos for one Ellexis Lathan of Concordia University College of Alberta Thunder.

Lathan, a second-year member of the Edmonton schools badminton team, has set concrete goals in the sport she was first introduced to in Grade 7. Goals that sometimes mean going over hurdles of a personal nature.

ACAC Badminton Teams Prepare for Nationals Qualifying

The 2010-11 ACAC Badminton season has been quite competitive with all 4 colleges showing signs of strength in various events. The team event has NAIT comfortably out in front in the overall point standings but Concordia and Mount Royal  have been battling all season for the second seed and with the help of a couple of second semester additions, Red Deer College looks to be a factor come play-off time.

03/08/2010 ... Edmonton ... The 2010 CCAA Badminton National Championships did not disappoint as the action was intense and stronger than ever. With the tournament coming to a close at NAIT on Saturday, March 6th, the medals were presented to the national champions in front of a crowd of crazed fans.

Ooks Repeat as ACAC Badminton Team Champions

02/16/2010 ... Edmonton ... The NAIT Ooks badminton team repeated as ACAC Team Champions this past weekend as they narrowly defeated the Concordia Thunder.  After the Ooks defeated Red Deer College 5-1 in the first semi-final, and the Thunder won a hard fought 5-3 win over the Mount Royal Cougars in the other semi-final, the stage was set for another much anticipated best of 9 ACAC Championship match-up between NAIT and Concordia.

Ooks Badminton Team Returns From Hawaii Re-Charged and Closer than Ever

The NAIT Ooks badminton recently returned from Hawaii this past weekend after competing in the 2010 Honolulu Open. The tournament was an opportunity for the nationally ranked #2 team to compete in an internationally known tournament and undergo some serious team bonding.
